Are you angry about Wall Street’s reckless excesses? Are you disappointed with President Obama’s limp approach to reform? You can change this, acting individually and collectively. Withdraw your deposit and savings accounts from the large banks that brought the system to ruin and were subsequently rescued with billions in government bailouts. Put your money instead in smaller, safer banks or credit unions closer to home–the thousands of community institutions that do not harvest their profits from greed and recklessness.

“Move Your Money” is an electrifying slogan that’s lighting up the Internet because it shows people how they can push back against the big dogs of banking. The concept is simple, but this is a big idea that could alter the timid direction of financial reform.

This campaign is potentially more than a feel-good gesture. If coordinated with institutional reform efforts, it could lead to a broad rebellion against the financial system, with citizens reclaiming the power to act directly when politicians are too intimidated by moneyed interests to act in the public interest. Economist Jane D’Arista put it crisply: “We are not a nation of widows and orphans. We have quite a lot of money, and people control some of it. They might ask why they don’t control more of it.”

The campaign was launched just before New Year’s Eve by Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post and Rob Johnson of the Roosevelt Institute. An influential bank-rating firm, Institutional Risk Analytics, donated a website window (moveyourmoney.info/find-a-bank), where citizens can find banks in their ZIP code that IRA certifies as safe and sound.

In the first forty-eight hours more than 100,000 responded with inquiries. Within a week, people had searched for good banks in 16,631 ZIP codes–nearly 40 percent of the nation. The search tool is now getting 45,000 users a day. Naturally, the corporate media promptly assured readers that “ordinary Americans lack the power to hurt the big banks,” as a Washington Post headline put it.

Wrong. The cynics either do not understand banking or misunderstand the widespread public anger. Dennis Santiago, IRA’s CEO and managing director, explained that banks compete fiercely for the “core deposits” provided by individual and small business accounts–this stable money is their preferred base for profitable lending. Take away core deposits, and bankers feel immediate balance-sheet stress. Expand the account base for community banks, and they gain greater stability and greater lending power. “Will moving your money have an effect?” Santiago asked. “And by effect, I don’t mean making a momentary political statement. I mean making a structural difference to the country’s financial system. The answer is yes.”

Structural change ought to be the primary goal of financial reform–breaking up the concentrated power held by mega-banks and creating a balanced system of smaller, more diverse lending institutions that thrive by serving local credit needs. Alas, the Obama administration and Congress are pursuing the opposite goal–rescuing the behemoths that failed and encouraging even greater financial concentration. This will lead to more reckless adventures, more “too big to fail” bailouts.

“Move Your Money” is an important model for teaching people how to change a dysfunctional system. The same principle of taking control of your own money is at work in related reform movements. A campaign launched by faith-based community organizations associated with the Industrial Areas Foundation identifies sky-high interest rates on credit cards and other lending as the ancient sin of usury. IAF groups are asking churches, foundations and local governments to withdraw funds from the usurious banks that profit by destroying borrowers. Organized labor, likewise, has launched an aggressive movement to insist on responsible investing values for the pension-fund wealth of working people, urging state treasurers and fund managers to invest for society’s interests as well as good returns.

Changing the nature of finance capitalism is a long road, to be sure, and the industry will resist change every step of the way. But the fight begins in earnest when people decide to move their money.

Open The Health Care Conference Committee To Public Scrutiny
(H.Res.847).

Last night we got an email from a Republican member of Congress
calling for public access to any health care bill conference
committee (H.Res.847). As you should well know by now, we are NOT
Republicans, we’ve only been advocating for every possible
progressive action for the last five years. But what progressive
could possibly be opposed to public scrutiny for the legislative
process? And sure enough, our most reliable hero Dennis Kucinich is a
sponsor as well.

The fact is, it’s not just the Republicans who have been shut out of
the debate to set national health care policy. The American people
have been completely shut out as well. This goes all the way back to
the beginning of the process, when activists were arrested and hauled
out of the Senate Finance committee for protesting the preemptive
exclusion of any discussion of Single Payer (Medicare for all) as a
basis for reform.

Now we hear that they don’t even plan on having a conference
committee to reconcile the weak bill passed by the House with the
total insurance industry sell out passed by the Senate. No, they are
just going to make another back room deal and install the worst case
Senate version by fiat. Even our House of Representatives is to be
shut out unless they entirely capitulate as well.

Action Page For Public Conference Committee:
http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1026.php

We all know the Republicans just want to obstruct the process,
whether the bill is good or bad. And we say bring it on, let the
American people SEE their obstructionism on our TVs. But shame on the
Democrats, shame, shame, shame, for giving the Republicans good cause
for doing so. And shame on us, if we for our own partisan reasons do
not protest this outrage. The public’s business must be conducted in
the full light of day.

You would be wrong if you were to think you are doing the President
and the Democratic Congress a favor, by not calling them out for
betraying the hope of the American people for a robust public plan.
Such a plan is broadly supported and would be wildly popular. It
would cement the Democrats in power for a generation. Instead, the
current administration seems bent on forcing through a medical
insurance industry sell out that will discredit the leadership of the
Democratic party beyond redemption.

You see it happening already. Joe Lieberman, the guy who demanded any
public option be taken out of the bill, including a possible expanded
Medicare buy in proposal, is seeing his approval ratings tank down to
George Bush numbers. And that same fate awaits ANY Democrat who does
not stand up now and demand better. Because when the American people
wake up to what a sick suck up to the insurance industry this bill
is, there will be hell to pay at the polls.

And the dirtiest shame is that the Republicans are getting a free
pass in all this. Nobody will remember that they actually opposed a
strong public plan too. All anybody will remember is that they
opposed the bill that everybody hates the guts out of, the bill the
Democrats forced through without even a fair conference committee,
that passed without a single Republican vote.

Action Page For Public Conference Committee:
http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1026.php

How can the Democrats be so utterly tone deaf, so politically stupid?
Who can save them from themselves? How could they be so perversely
determined to thrown away every scrap of good will and optimism that
the American people had riding on the outcome of this last election.
We’d better all speak up, and the Democrats had better listen, or the
current majority will be very short-lived indeed. And that’s not what
any of us want.

For Facebook Participants ONLY:

Once again, the regular action page links above are for anyone. But
we told you two years ago, when we developed Voices, our action page
application for Facebook, that we could change the world with
Facebook alone. At that time they had about 50 million participants.
That number is now up to 350 million, and they are now the biggest
social media network there is, 3 times bigger than MySpace. There are
totally frivolous GAME applications on Facebook now with 75 million
users. That’s more people than it takes to elect a president of the
United States.

We have gigantic mobilization plans for Facebook, but the first thing
we need all of you to do, if you are on Facebook already, is to get
your OWN Voices application tab on your own profile page, a new
capability they just made possible. This is what will enable you to
watch and submit action pages over there and to mobilize and alert
all your friends to do the same. You can even create your own action
pages on any issue you care about. You can put the Voices application
tab right on your own personal profile page, just as Democrats.com
has already done.

http://www.facebook.com/democratscom?v=app_2370152746

So if you are already on Facebook, go to the link above, check out
what the application does, and most importantly, click on “Get
Application Tab” in the menu at the top for quick and easy
instructions on getting your own Voices tab for your profile page.
Three simple steps. Do it now. When you submit an action you can
automatically alert all your friends. Why aren’t we taking more
advantage of this built in mobilization engine?? Now we are.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed
to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

November 20-22, 2009, Fort Benning, Georgia:
Mass Mobilization to Shut Down the School of the Americas

    * The SOA graduate-led military coup in Honduras and the increasing U.S. military involvement in Colombia put a renewed focus on the School of the Americas (SOA/ WHINSEC) and the policies it represents.

    * Thousands from across the Americas will converge on November 20-22 at Fort Benning, GA for a vigil and civil disobedience actions to speak out against the SOA/ WHINSEC and to demand a change in U.S. foreign policy.

    * The vigil will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1989 SOA graduate-led Jesuit massacre in San Salvador, and the many other thousands of victims of SOA/ WHINSEC violence.

The military coup led by SOA graduates in Honduras has once again exposed the destabilizing and deadly effects that the School of the Americas (SOA/ WHINSEC) has on Latin America. Torture survivors and human rights activists from across the Americas, including Bertha Oliva, the founder of the Committee of the Family Members of the Disappeared (COFADEH) from Honduras and human rights defenders from Colombia will travel to Fort Benning, Georgia to participate in the mobilization.

The campaign to close the SOA/ WHINSEC is in a crucial phase right now. Despite promising comments from President Obama during his 2008 election campaign, the SOA/ WHINSEC is still in operation, the U.S. is poring millions into failing “military solutions” to combat the drug problems in Mexico and the Pentagon is moving forward with plans to use seven Colombian military bases in Colombia for offensive U.S. military operations.

“It is up to us to hold those responsible accountable and to push for to closing of the School of the Americas and a change in US foreign policy” said Father Roy Bourgeois, the founder of SOA Watch. “Too many have died and continue to suffer at the hands of graduates of this notorious institute.”

In the fall of 2009, opponents of the SOA/ WHINSEC achieved a victory when a joint House and Senate conference committee agreed to include language in the FY 2010 Defense Authorization bill that requires the Pentagon to release names of the graduates of the SOA/ WHINSEC to the public. The Pentagon had classified the names after the continued involvement of SOA/ WHINSEC attendees in human rights abuses became public.

For more information about the November vigil to close the SOA/ WHINSEC, lead-up actions and a complete schedule of events, visit www.SOAW.org

Leaders of 20 of the most powerful governments in the world, representing 19 countries and the European Union, are descending upon Pittsburgh in late September. We, concerned residents participating in the local outreach working group of the Pittsburgh G-20 Resistance Project, are asking for individuals and organizations that are seeking a better world to come and show their opposition to these undemocratic, closed meetings. Our future belongs to us, not to our governments!

We are calling for a diversity of actions throughout the week, and we hope that you can join us, as you are able. Below this update on resources is a detailed day-by-day list of events that we’ve organized. Additionally, there are a number of trainings, workshops and presentations happening over the next two weeks: http://resistg20.org/calendar.

Check out the new convergence space at 4374 Murray Ave. in Greenfield! Open hours this week are Thursday (Sept. 17) noon-8pm, Friday (Sept. 18) noon-8pm, Saturday (Sept. 19) 2pm-10pm, and Sunday (Sept. 20) 10am-8pm. We hope to be open even longer hours during the week of the G-20. Check the website for updates on hours of operation. We are currently in the process of hammering out space guidelines dealing with respectful conduct, law enforcement, media, consent and sexual assault. These will be posted on our site in the next day or two.

Our website also features vivid posters, flyers, promotional videos (including “The Anarchist Simpsons: Stephen Hawking Leads Riots against the G-20”), educational resources, a ride board, info on medics and their call to action, info on the students working group, and even the map of the announced security perimeter around the summit. So take a second to go there (http://resistg20.org) if you haven’t already!

As far as other resources go, the PGRP is happy to provide childcare for visiting dissidents. Local childcare specialists are committed to providing a safe and caring space for children during the convergence. The hours for childcare are 9:00am-9:00pm, on Thursday, September 24 and Friday, September 25. Ages for children are infant-12. More on childcare: http://resistg20.org/childcare

The housing working group has reported that the space we have available for housing during the actions is extremely limited. We have only a very small amount of space left in individual housing. If you are a local and still have some space, please fill out the form on http://resistg20.org/housing. If you are from out of town, note that the last day to apply for individual/ match-maker housing is Sept. 18. After that, we can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to find space for everyone who requests it. If you’ve got friends or neighbors in Pittsburgh, now is the time to contact them!

We’ve got comms. Tin Can Comms Collective is a collection of communication rebels seeking to provide useful free tools for activists fighting the State and Capitalism. They are an anarchist group that has come together to help with the communication infrastructure for the Anti-G-20 protests because: People and Information want to be Free! Anyone who wants to be part of providing up-to-date and relevant information to people on the streets can get involved. It’s very easy. All you need is a cell-phone (they strongly suggest a pre-paid that can get text/sms messages) and opposable thumbs. Tin Can will collect information from websites, media, scouts and participants on the street. These communications will be filtered and then sent to those who are subscribed to one of their lists. You will receive texts. Go here for information on how to plug in: http://tincancomms.wordpress.com/

Lastly, the legal update. If you are arrested, witness an arrest, or to report surveillance, harassment, brutality or any other incidents please dial: 412-444-3553. To report a civil liberties violation, please contact the ACLU at 412-562-5015. With any other inquires please e-mail legal@resistg20.org. The PGRP legal team has committed to: running a legal hotline, answering calls from jail and arrest reports, tracking folks through jail and doing their best to communicate with support people on the outside. The team will be in communication with a group of attorneys about any legal emergencies during the summit and will do their best to help arrestees and victims of state repression get in touch with appropriate attorneys for criminal defense and possible civil litigation. The legal team has NOT committed to collecting individual legal information, so please fill out a legal support form and leave it with a friend or somebody in your affinity group! (available at www.g20legal.org) This will be incredibly helpful as they try to track you through the system. They are NOT committing to bailing people out of jail. If you are planning on risking arrest please make plans also to bail yourselves out. And they are NOT committing to securing pro-bono legal defense for all arrestees. They’ll do their best to match you up with appropriate legal help but if you are arrested, do plan on the possibility of relying either on a public defender or paying for legal representation.

THE ACTIONS AND EVENTS

Tuesday, September 22
On Tuesday, September 22, neighborhoods in Pittsburgh will be having community picnics, where long-time residents, short-time residents, and the early-bird protesters can share a meal and talk about the better world that they want to live in. The G-20 tries to present itself as leaders getting together, but whenever they meet it seems to cost millions and involve police hitting people over the head with batons. Let’s show them how a real civil gathering works: good people, good food, good times. Locals in the East End have already confirmed an Anti-G-20 Community Gathering in Friendship Park from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Besides food, music and conversation, Rustbelt Radio, a project of Pittsburgh Indymedia, will be on hand collecting stories for its G-Infinity Media Project. The live, streaming audio project is a non-corporate, participatory media forum for the voices of the people who will not be in the room during the summit, who are affected by the G-20 economic policies but whose stories go largely untold. http://resistg20.org/tuesday

Wednesday, September 23
Wednesday night, September 23, at 7:00 pm, there will be a spokescouncil meeting for information sharing and coordination at our convergence space, located at 4374 Murray Ave. The spokescouncil is a place for affinity groups to share decisions that they have made and identify things that they need to do and decisions that they need to make.If you are planning on attending, PLEASE READ this page: http://resistg20.org/wednesday on the spokescouncil format.

Thursday, September 24
Thursday, September 24, will feature a People’s Uprising, a mass march to disrupt the G-20 summit. We’ll be starting at Arsenal Park at 2:30 pm in Lawrenceville, a vibrant working class community in the city, and marching to the G-20 summit downtown. Our theme is “Power from Below, Not Impositions from Above.” Our only permit is our feet and voices. The G-20 is in the house, throwing a party. Let’s crash it. Read the whole call to action here: http://resistg20.org/thursday

Friday, September 25
Friday, September 25, we’ll be working to undermine the G-20 summit by attacking their power, making connections to the local manifestations of their neoliberal agenda. The folks that gather in the convention center represent large governments that draw their power from collusion with powerful corporations, governments that draw their wealth from resource extraction and destruction to our world, and governments that maintain their forces through the direct violence of police forces and militaries. Without these structural supports, their power will disintegrate. The G-20 is in a house of cards: let’s shake the table. The action working group of the Pittsburgh G-20 Resistance Project has drawn up a list of 100 potential targets, and many groups will be claiming a destination somewhere in the city. We call for these coordinated actions to end at 11:30 am in which we will demonstrate: we do not need to be together physically to be together in struggle. http://resistg20.org/friday

We encourage people to form affinity groups with those that they know and trust, to have familiar faces to stick with in the streets and people to organize and take action with. An affinity group is when you get together with folks who are on the same page as you about what kind of action you want to do. Maybe they’re your friends from work or school, maybe they’re your marching band mates. What each group’s action will be on Friday is up to that person or affinity group. We ask that each affinity group send one member of that group to our spokescouncil on Wednesday night to share information, coordinate and to pick a focus for Friday, if one is not already chosen.

After the actions end at 11:30 am, there will be an anti-authoritarian contingent in the Thomas Merton Center Anti-War Committee’s state-sanctioned People’s March to the summit site. This contingent will adhere to the Pittsburgh Principles (http://resistg20.org/principles), respecting the tone and tactics of the march organizers.

We are working hard with many groups and individuals in order to ensure there is a solid foundation for all of these actions to be a success. We ask those who are able to contribute more than their bodies – those who are interested in helping to provide legal support, scouting, staffing the convergence center, medical support, food, housing, etc. — to do what they can to help the resistance. If you see a need that you can fill, fill it. If you’re not exactly sure how to do that but want to try, get in touch.

As we prepare for the upcoming G20 summit in Pittsburgh, the Spring World
Bank and IMF meetings, the ebbs and flows of our respective local
campaigns, and anything else under the sun, we’ll be congregating in the
woods of Northern Virginia for an action-packed Anarchy Summer Camp.

Anarchy Summer Camp (ASC) is tailored to fit every anarchists’ needs: from
the veteran to the newbie, all are welcome. ASC is not an accredited
Summer Camp. We do, however, have the following skills and knowledge to
share with all campers: building and using shields and reinforced banners,
navigating through the woods, sharpening your knives, permaculture,
terrain analysis, health and safety in the streets, and more! Campers will
start their day with a morning run to get the blood flowing and a group
stretch. We will explore area ponds, lakes, and dumpsters. Group
activities abound at Anarchy Summer Camp including, but not limited to:
Capture the Flag, evasion games, wind sprints, and tactical aquatics….

The war in Afghanistan is a quagmire bordering on a catastrophe. With a current price tag of $2 billion a month, this drawn-out conflict took the lives of 155 American soldiers and 2,118 Afghan civilians last year–the bloodiest year of the war to date. Western airstrikes alone killed 522 civilians, fueling hostility toward the United States and causing more Afghans to join and support the Taliban insurgency that has spread into Pakistan. President Obama has escalated our military presence by committing an additional 17,000 US troops and 4,000 trainers to work with Afghan security forces. Where is the public outcry? The Nation and Z.P. Heller, editorial director of Brave New Films, have put together a list of things you can do to oppose the war.

 1) Watch parts one and two of Brave New Films’ documentary Rethink Afghanistan, which explores many fundamental questions.

 2) Read up on the war. Anand Gopal’s coverage for the Christian Science Monitor has been insightful; see also Ann Jones’s Kabul in Winter and articles like Gilles Dorronsoro’s “Focus and Exit: An Alternative Strategy for the Afghan War”. The Nation’s own Robert Dreyfuss has more “For Your Reading Pleasure.”

 3) Check out the coalition of bloggers and activists seeking nonmilitary alternatives to escalation at Get Afghanistan Right.

 4) Demand Congressional oversight hearings. It is Congress’s duty to challenge policy-makers and inform the public about everything from the overall mission to the efficiency of military agencies. Sign a petition calling on Senator John Kerry and Representative Howard Berman to hold hearings immediately.

 5) What question would you ask at a Congressional hearing on Afghanistan? Take a video of yourself or a friend asking your question and e-mail it to Brave New Foundation via YouTube. For help on recording and uploading your video to YouTube, watch the tutorial video and follow the Quick Capture instructions and then go to Rethink Afghanistan to submit the video.

 6) Contact your senators and representative directly to demand Congressional oversight hearings. If you can’t visit their offices, a phone call or e-mail to voice your opinion can be just as effective.

 7) Write to your local paper’s editorial board and your favorite political blogs to raise concerns about the war. Don’t let the mainstream media remain silent as they did before the Iraq War!

 8) Support anti-escalation Afghan groups working for women’s rights and social justice. You can aid organizations like the Afghan Women’s Mission, MADRE and the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) by buying them equipment from their Amazon “wish list” that helps them document and spread the news about their efforts. Stay updated with the Afghan Women’s Mission newswire.

 9) Join the Campus Antiwar Network and hold teach-ins, debates, talks, demonstrations and walkouts on college campuses across the country.

10) Get involved in the peace movement with groups like Win Without War and Peace Action West, which are devoted to finding nonviolent alternatives to military escalation in Afghanistan. Follow Peace Action West on Twitter.

PALM BEACH COUNTY PRESENTATION
Thursday, April 2nd 2009, 6:00pm
North Pole, 416 Revere Rd, West Palm Beach FL
Call (561) 588-0287 for directions
$5-10 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds

Anarchists Against the Wall is a direct action group that fights against Israeli apartheid and oppression in all its forms, most recently also the atrocities in Gaza. For five years the group has waged a constant struggle against Israel’s Wall. The work on the ground in the West Bank, alongside the Palestinian popular movement is breaking new ground in the joint struggle for Palestinian liberation. In December 2008, Anarchists Against the Wall and the Bil’in Village Committee were jointly awarded the prestigious Carl von Ossietzky Medal—an award given annually by the Berlin-based International League of Human Rights, named after German Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietzky who died in a Nazi concentration camp.

Now more than ever, it is critical to support the Israeli resistance movement against the state’s attempted repression of their work. Members of Anarchists Against the Wall continually pay the price for their activism, including being shot, beaten, arrested and indicted. AATW desperately needs funding for legal support for both Palestinian and Israeli activists who are arrested and charged in the course of the struggle.

The presentation will include film and photos, and will focus both on AATW’s recent work in solidarity with Gaza and ongoing work in the West Bank.

For more information or if you have any questions about the tour, please email aatwtour@gmail.com

The street battles that took place in St. Paul, Minnesota over the course of the Republican National Convention are now a memory–battles hard won by those brave protesters who defied the thousands of police and National Guard in place throughout the Twin Cities to guard what is most precious to those in power: law and order.

The authorities had hoped to preemptively contain the RNC protests by unleashing a tsunami of repression against local organizers who were involved in logistical support work. Eight people, after early morning house raids and preemptive arrests mere days before the action would begin, have now been charged as terrorists under a state-version of the Patriot Act and are facing 12 and a half years in prison and fines of $25,000 per person.

Just as the authorities failed to quiet the protests that engulfed downtown St. Paul, we must act to once again disrupt their well-laid plans! Through ingenuity and solidarity we can accomplish the most amazing feats, as those on the streets of St. Paul can attest. The prosecution of the RNC8 is a naked attempt to criminalize above-ground legal organizing — and we will not let friends and fellow travelers go to jail without a fight!
